On January 10, a research team that includes Chae-Yeon Lee, a master's student in the Department of Chemistry and Energy Engineering at Sangmyung University, announced that it has recently succeeded in developing a safe battery separator using cellulose acetate and citric acid. In particular, Chae-yeon Lee played an important role in directly designing the structure of the battery separator and the experimental process. The results of the study were published in the January 2024 issue of the Carbohydrate Polymers journal. The Carbohydrate Polymers journal has an impact factor of 11.2 and is ranked in the top 3.5% of Polymer Science by the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) site. It is very rare for a master's student to publish as a first author in such a world-class academic journal.

The key of the research is the addition of citric acid to cellulose acetate, which overcomes the limitations of existing battery separators and improves their performance. The addition of citric acid increases the mechanical strength of the battery separator, enhances thermal stability, and improves the existing phase separation process. Cellulose* acetate is an acetic acid ester that acetylates the hydroxy groups in the cellulose molecule. This is made by mixing fiber with acetic anhydride and thick sulfuric acid. It is used to radiate acetate fibers and make non-flammable films, plastics, and electrical insulators. Therefore, this research is a cost-effective and eco-friendly method that has potential applications in various industries, including energy storage such as batteries, water treatment, and functional filters.

Kang Sang-wook, a professor of chemical and energy engineering at Sangmyung University, a supervisor, said, "We highly appreciate Lee Chae-yeon's outstanding research ability and devotional efforts, and her achievements are expected to set an important foundation in the future battery field."
